The owners/founders/operators of Blind Appeal, Frank and his wife Wendy, are not only fans of Mr. Shoemaker’s photography (you really have to see it for yourself!), but they are so happy to be able to carry his work in their showrooms. 

As for Mr. Shoemaker himself, well that is an excellent story. A story for the ages, one may even say. Currently, (who knows where he will end up next!) he is a fine art photographer living in Maui, Hawaii. His nature photography is known and respected the world over. Think Ansel Adams but in 4K HD and with vibrant colors. The most common subjects of his lens art are landscapes like beaches, sunsets, forests, international monuments/landmarks and so much more. Living on the island of Maui has its benefits. He is right around the corner, literally, from some of the most jaw-dropping vistas in the world, including the scenic Valley Isle. 

His passion and his masterwork career started innocently enough. He took his camera along with him on nature walks and hikes in order to document his offroad adventures through the trails and the snow. He was able to see beauty in everything that surrounded him as he made his way through the wilderness and he was able to capture that beauty and show it to others through his photographs. The mysteries and beauty of mother nature was captured, if even for a brief moment, on film with his talent.

The Play By Play

For the ribbon cutting ceremony day, we really went all out in our new showroom space! The turnout was spectacular with over 200 people from around the Treasure Valley in attendance. Thank you to all who came!

We had several grills going with hotdogs and hamburgers (for free!) cooked to order for all of the families to enjoy. With all of the food and fun and people around, it was like a massive tailgating party for your favorite football team (Go BSU!) but without the nasty weather. It was actually quite pleasant on the day with temps in the 60’s and lots of sun. 

We had a raffle available with over $3000 worth of prizes as well, furnished by our friends in the local community. Prizes included BSU football game tickets, window covering products, and fully packed gift baskets. 

Besides the free food, fun prizes, and great atmosphere, we also provided specially guided tours of our new facility. Our friendly staff was happy to show everybody at the event all of the new displays and showcase pieces we had arranged.

• Make sure that all cribs and child beds are well away from windows if possible. It is too much of a temptation for them to climb up if their bed is close to a window.
• If you DO currently have blinds with cords, we strongly recommend that you install hooks or anchors to the sides of your windows that you can use to tie or wrap the cord around so that it is well out of the reach of your children. Then, we recommend immediately purchasing cordless child safe blinds if possible
• As you do your spring and fall cleaning each year, take a moment to assess your home’s child safety features. Here are some things to look for:
  • Are the corners of your counters and tables padded?
  • Do you have fresh batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors?
  • Are your electrical sockets equipped with plugs to prevent children from playing with them?
  • Do you have the contact information for poison control and their pediatrician on hand?
  • Are your cleaning supplies and chemicals out of reach and locked securely away from your children’s reach?

Skyler Jackson - Exterior Shade Manager

Skyler is a veteran of the window covering business and can do just about every part of the business with ease. He started his blind related career as an installer at Jacksons Shade Company and worked there for over 12 years. We were then lucky enough to have him join our team and he hasn’t looked back since. With over 16 years of installation, product, and sales experience, Skyler is a valuable member of the management staff and keeps his team running like a Swiss watch. 

When he’s not at work, Skyler plays hard in the mountains adventuring on his snowmobile in the winter and his motorcycle in the summer. 

Mandy Sallee - Account Executive

As an account executive, you have to really be on the ball to keep current customers happy and to entice prospective customers to purchase our products and services. We are lucky to have Mandy because she is exactly that and so much more. She has a deep background in customer service and outside sales having dedicated part of her career to working in the medical field, eighteen years to be exact. Seven of which as an office manager. Her problem solving skills are unmatched and she jumps at a challenge. As all good salespeople have to be, she is a charismatic “people person” and takes pride in serving customers.

While not at work, Mandy enjoys spending time with her family camping and hiking the great trails of Idaho.

Jake’s installation experience spans decades and is an absolute essential member of our team. He takes great pride in his craftsmanship and always goes the extra mile when it comes to helping a client achieve their goals. He is an Idaho native and is close with his family who all live locally as well. He enjoys soccer in local leagues (see, always a team player!) and spends winters snowmobiling Idaho’s scenic hills.

Brian may not have as many years under his belt as Jake, but what he may lack in experience, he more than makes up for in dedication and passion for his work. Hi everyone my name is Kris Ott. I am a Boise “native” or “from here” as you have probably seen on several bumper stickers. I have felt very lucky to grow up in such an amazing place, surrounded by all the wonderful things Idaho has to offer. Boise will always hold a spot in my heart, and I am excited to see all the new growth and outside influences that come with it. Especially the new In-N-Out they are putting in, we can only thank the California people for that one!

I enjoy being outside, not just confined to nature, but even my backyard is fun. This is our first year of gardening, I always had gardens growing up, just never had the space for one until now. I am constantly building or creating, I enjoy woodworking and cooking, the weekends leave all of the bellies full and a small mess in the kitchen. 

I started Cleaner Windows in February of 2020 as a birthday present to myself, and a few short weeks before Idaho received its first documented case of COVID. I always wanted to build a company based on the way I saw fit, and grow it based on the old time saying of “do the right thing, no matter what”. This is something that seems to have been forgotten over time, and a lot of new companies no longer abide by it. 

I have been in the home cleaning industry since 2012, and specifically learned window cleaning in 2013. I started as a carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning technician working for Boise’s oldest carpet cleaning company “Certified, INC”. After a short time there I ventured out into window cleaning. The values and principles I learned from an historic company didn’t line up with this new path I was on, so I decided to go back to carpet cleaning and figure out how I could start a window cleaning company that operated on these same principles. Eventually after the owner of Certified retired, a few odd jobs, and continuing to do window cleaning on the side, I decided to go all in and start Cleaner Windows.

My favorite part of the work day would be my interactions with the clients, and the gratification of seeing a job well done. I enjoy hearing people's stories and maintaining working relationships with their clients that make time for it. You might be surprised but dozens of meaningful conversations have happened while I am working and a client is in the same area also working.

My least favorite part is all the bad jokes I hear from people passing by. I can’t count how many times I have heard “You missed a spot.” In fact I will probably put that on the back of a T-shirt one day.

I decided to partner with Frank and Blind Appeal, because I see the way he operates and who he is as a person and I believe we both hold the same values of business to be true. He has developed an amazing and successful company which started in a modest way. There’s something to be said about the small business owners who put their all into their company only hoping for the best. I am also excited to learn from the entire Blind Appeal team to see how a larger, but still small business, operates on the scale that they do. Everyone has been extremely welcoming since we have transitioned over to the new space. 

There are several reasons why you should become a client of ours. Each year, it's safe to say, no short of a dozen window cleaning companies pop up every year in the valley. Like I mentioned, I have now over 10 years of experience cleaning windows. I started a window pane counter on the website the first year I started Cleaner Windows and it surpassed over 10,000 pieces of glass so I just stopped keeping track. Multiply that by 10 years and I feel like I am nearing seeing it all, but I have also learned from it all. From the mistakes and the issues, the good, the bad, everything has helped me continue to grow. 

All my technicians quickly learn based on my knowledge that I share with them. They don’t have to relearn my lessons, they just have to be willing to learn. If we don’t know something I will go out of my way to figure out a solution, not just fabricate a story that you want to hear. We are Certified through the International Window Cleaning Association, and I take any courses they introduce that further that education. I love learning new practices and safety standards. We carry insurance, have new vehicles that have amazing logos, every technician has a work uniform that looks professional but also has some style to it. 

We are accredited through the BBB and won the 2022’s Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorite award. We genuinely care about your needs and if you feel like having a conversation we gladly will engage in it! The next couple of years have different goals for both my company and the business. I am a new father as of last Halloween to a happy little guy named Harrison. I love spending time with him and my wife Tessa. I really would like to focus on being in his life as much as possible, or until Tessa and him decide I need to work more so they can enjoy their own time. Full disclosure: I am high energy and love to make Harrison laugh all day long and at any expense to myself. 

For the company I would love to see it continue to grow and gain the respect in the valley it deserves. We will be in the top 5 in our industry continuing to provide amazing service with a smile. Ideally we will grow with some more new employees that fit our core values and continue picking up new clients that have been forgotten about by other companies. Idaho Shakespeare Festival 

Nestled just above Downtown Boise in the rolling foothills, this truly historical outdoor amphitheater breathes life into The Bard’s words each summer in a very park-like setting. One of the few places around the globe that still performs Shakespeare’s works as they were originally intended, this is an open air stage with minimal props and backgrounds, emphasizing the acting skills and techniques of the players themselves. So, the Sail Toads are the main charitable organization behind the Robie Creek race. They are named after a semi-mythical creature also called a sail toad that, as legend would have it, lives in the Rocky Canyon through which the race winds. This charity helps to organize and run the race each year while also donating huge amounts of the proceeds to fantastic charities like these listed below. We definitely are grateful to the organization for helping to organize this event each year and for all of the good that they have managed to do for our community and our country by donating over 1.2 million dollars to various charities. What Is At The New Warehouse Right Now?

Rome wasn’t built in a day, that’s for sure and this warehouse move is no exception. We are currently split between the new space and the current space while things get transitioned to the new area. Right now, we are using the new Meridian warehouse space as our interior and exterior shade storage area as well as office spaces that house our commercial office and warehouse manager’s office. As the year goes on, we will continually be moving more and more of our infrastructure to the new place, but in order to ensure that our business stays in the best position to serve our clients, we are rolling out the move over time. 

What Are Future Plans For It?

Who really knows what the future holds? Well, we do! For the warehouse, that is. We are planning on completing the move and conversions by July of 2023 at the latest. Included in our future plans, we will be using the new space (currently clocking in at over 36,000 square feet) as a storage area for our products, but we also plan to have a great showroom for you to see all of our lovely products in action and be able to ask our helpful sales staff any questions you may have before making your next purchase. 

The showroom will be for our exterior shades, interior shades, and will be home to the new outdoor patio supplies we will be selling soon. That’s right! We’re expanding our product line to include the highest quality, stunning outdoor patio supplies. We can’t wait to tell you all about the new products.

The Fruit Of The Giving Tree

We are proud to announce that we are setting up a “Giving Tree” in our company’s warehouse for the 2nd year in a row. The “Giving Tree” is a special tree that is adorned with many ornaments (tags) upon which is inscribed the various toys/clothes/gift cards that the children would want as gifts for Christmas. Our staff will then take the gift tags off the tree and purchase the items written on the ornaments and place the items back under the tree. Once all of the ornaments have been spoken for, everything is gathered up and returned to the Rescue Mission for them to distribute to the children on a special day in December.

A Short History Of The BRM

The Rescue Mission was founded all the way back in 1958 by Christ’s Gospel Mission. It was founded in part to help the local people of Boise in their time of need and its mission continues to this day. Some of the original founding board members were: E.S. Gingrich, Walt Wilson, Bob Freeman, Sam Parvin, James Law, Howard Waterman, Leo Hudlet, Aaron Olson, Mike Watson, Frank Ericson, and Chuck Bradshaw.

Reduce Window Access

One of the easiest safety precautions you can do is to reduce a child’s access to the corded window covering area. Move furniture away from windows, including cribs, beds, toy chests, and tables. Make sure they are on a separate wall entirely if possible. Instruct your children to not play on or around windows or window sills and to not play with drapes or other accessories.  

Fix Dangling Cords

Next, you can go around your home and inspect your window coverings that have cords. Make sure that all dangling cords are up and securely out of the reach of children. Anchor your continuous loop cords securely to the floor and make sure that tassel cords are pulled as short as possible.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of the United States Of America has concluded that corded window coverings are among the top five hidden hazards within American homes today. According to the Window Covering Safety Council, “Corded window coverings are a strangulation hazard as infants and young children can accidentally become entangled in the cords. A serious accident can only take seconds. The CPSC, the window covering industry, and consumer safety advocates all agree that only cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords should be used in homes with young children.”

This tournament will be held on September 1st at 7:30am and the proceeds will go to the Mission Aviation Fellowship which strives to bring help, hope, and healing to isolated people around the globe. Our Office Staffing Changes

They say that the only true constant is change and that is no lie when it comes to business. We have decided to make some interesting and impactful changes to our staffing at the main office space, aka the headquarters. Here are the bullet points of our staffing movements and details behind the moves. 

*Katy has been moved to the Office Administrator position for the four other office staff. She was formerly the Office Manager. 

*Mandy has been moved from Administrative Assistant to Account Executive.

*Jade has been hired as another Account Executive, making a total of two in the office. 

*Account Executives are responsible for their own group of sales associates. Mandy is responsible for Wes, John, and Skyler. Jade is responsible for Ryan, Mike, and Nichole. They will help the sales associates take care of their customers with the utmost of diligence. They will communicate during the pre and post engagement period with introductions while extending a helping hand for any of their needs or questions. They will also track orders, reorders, and generally fulfill client and employee needs. This was developed to help our team better serve our customers!

*Sarah is our new Office Specialist and is responsible for answering phones and scheduling. She will also be forwarding calls and messages to other team members.

Mother’s Day Picnic Baskets Fundraiser

This year, the PWB did an outrageously fun and successful fundraiser that any mom would love. They built dozens of high quality wooden picnic baskets that folded out into a delightful little table. These baskets were then stuffed with goodies provided by local sponsors and sold as part of the fundraiser. (Think wine, cheese, bread and other treats!). The proceeds all went to the SRVBCA Professional Women in Building Scholarship fund which helps young women around the U.S. achieve their dreams of getting a higher education and pursuing a career in the building industry. Shed Fundraiser

Blinds Cleaning Method #1: Sock It To Me! 

Don’t have a blind cleaning attachment on your vacuum? Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. Take an old (clean) sock and place it over your hand and then spray it with one or two spritzes of warm water and start cleaning! Wipe from side to side with the blinds fully closed at first, and then reverse the direction of the blinds and wipe the other side. Finish by going over them with a completely dry sock or microfiber cloth to get the last little bits of dust and debris. Don’t forget to sweep or vacuum afterwards because cleaning several sets of dusty blinds can put a lot of dust particles in the air and they will settle on the ground and make a mess on the floor after a while. 

Method # 2: How To Clean Cellular & Honeycomb Shades

To clean your cellular and honeycomb shades, you will need a few different items that you may have lying around the house or they can be picked up at your local big box store. You will need a microfiber cloth, a can of compressed air (like for cleaning computer keyboards etc.), a bowl of lukewarm water with about 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and a vacuum with a brush attachment. Once you have those things, then follow these cleaning steps. 

Step 1. Dusting your cellular shades.

• Take your microfiber cloth and gently wipe the front and back of your shades from top to bottom. You may have to take the cloth outside a few times to shake the dust out. 
• Use the can of compressed air to blow out any dust or debris within the honeycomb pockets. You will probably want to vacuum or sweep the floor afterwards as it will kick up a lot of dust.

Step 2. Spot cleaning 

• Now take your microfiber cloth and get it wet in the soapy water dish. Use the cloth to spot clean any apparent dirt patches or stains on the shades. You may have to scrub each area a few times to get stuck on grime out. Don’t be too harsh though, as that can ruin or misshape the fabric. 

Step 3. Vacuuming

• Once you have finished spot cleaning, take your vacuum with the brush attachment to the shades again starting from top to bottom. Use the lowest suction setting if possible. Once you have vacuumed both sides, then you should be done! Enjoy your new clean shades!

What Is the March To End Hunger Campaign?

The March To End Hunger Campaign is an annual food drive that encourages local businesses to hold food drives during the month of March. These drives can be open to both employees and non-employees which includes customers, clients, and family members. It starts March 1st and goes through March 31st. To put a nice button on the month-long drive, it wraps up the month with a “Can Castle Competition”. Here’s more info from the Rescue Mission website regarding the Can Castle Competition:

While not a requirement, anyone who has hosted a food drive can choose to build a "castle" out of the items they have collected and enter it into the competition for the coveted Golden Can trophy. Everyone is encouraged to tackle the challenge as creatively as they like. Can Castle photos must be submitted by midnight on March 31st, and voting will take place on Facebook from April 1st to April 5th. All non-perishable food and other necessities are welcome as donations during this event. Please feel free to donate anything you wish as long as it is shelf stable and is a household necessity. We are currently looking for things like diapers (sizes 4, 5, and 6), baby wipes, dryer sheets, men’s underwear, cold medicine, toilet paper, and much much more! What Is The Boise Rescue Mission Ministries?

The Rescue Mission was founded all the way back in 1958 by Christ’s Gospel Mission. It was founded in part to help the local people of Boise in their time of need and its mission continues to this day. Some of the original founding board members were: E.S. Gingrich, Walt Wilson, Bob Freeman, Sam Parvin, James Law, Howard Waterman, Leo Hudlet, Aaron Olson, Mike Watson, Frank Ericson, and Chuck Bradshaw.

What Is Blind Appeal Doing To Help?

This year, we are proud to announce that we have set up a Giving Tree donation center in our warehouse. A Giving Tree is a tree decorated with ornaments that have various needed items on them that businesses can set up in their offices to help facilitate donations from employees. The employees will then take an ornament or two and purchase the item and return it to the tree during the drive. Once the drive time window is closed, then the gifts are gathered from the business and donated to those in need at the Rescue Mission. Currently, we have 55 presents and counting under our giving tree. Contact us to learn more or if you want to participate. It’s good fun for the whole family.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has listed corded window coverings as one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes. Infants and young children face strangulation hazards from window cords, a serious accident that can only take seconds to happen. Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic: September 1st - 5th

This incredible event is back for its 20th year of filling the sky with a variety of colorful and unique hot air balloons. An event you can enjoy from almost anywhere in Boise by just looking up! If you want the best experience head to Ann Morrison Park to watch them take off in the morning. Boise State football is back and fans once again get to see their beloved home team take to the blue turf for their first home game of the season. The Sliding Door Problem

As many a good home decorator will tell you, finding the perfect window covering solution for your home’s sliding glass doors is no easy task. Sliding doors are typically high traffic areas so you will need a covering solution that will be durable and able to stand up to abuse and functions easily so that getting it out of the way of the opening is quick and easy. Glass doors let in a tremendous amount of light and heat. They tend to let the Sun’s rays have their way with the place and can lead to higher energy bills in the summer and greater wear and tear on your home due to UV ray bleaching, so the window covering must also be able to block as much of the sun’s light as possible while still being easy to use and durable. That is a tall order!

The Window Covering Solution: Multiple Choice

There are lots of ways to tackle this problem. Luckily we have six great suggestions to help you with your solution.

Vertical Slats Or Vinyl Slats

These are a great marriage of form and function. They can be easily moved out of the way with one hand and can offer protection from sunlight even while open half way. People may be surprised to learn that they come in a variety of colors and materials and aren't just relegated to being stiff vinyl or plastic slats. The downside with these is that they tend to break or get damaged in homes with small children or rambunctious larger dogs.

Draperies

You can’t go wrong with draperies, right? This classic solution is perfect for homes that want a warm and comforting feel with the ease of use that a good drapery system provides. If you want total blackout light protection for your home theater or bedroom, nothing beats them.

Sliding Panels

Less common but very effective. These are recommended for homes with a higher budget for window coverings or if you want to try something completely different than your usual covering fare. These can be motorized and automated to help you complete your ultimate smart home experience.

Honeycomb Shades

These are an excellent middle ground between heavy drapes and vinyl slats. If you already have honeycomb shades then this will help tie that theme together and they come in a variety of colors and textures. These are also perfect for helping you save on your energy bills as the honeycomb design helps keep the largest amount of heat out of your home. 

Plantation Shutters

There are two options. We can install them so that they roll from side to side, but beware that you might lose a good amount of the view out of the sliding door area if you do. We can also have them with vertical hinges as they will swing outward from the door like a closet door. 

Roller Shades

These are very helpful in a higher traffic sliding door home. They easily fold up and out of the way so that you can go in and out with ease. Perfect if you love to entertain outside in the backyard or have a large family that is constantly using it. These can also be our special banded shades which can offer partial privacy and can also be automated and motorized and part of your smart home setup.

For the entire month of March, Blind Appeal is joining other business leaders, groups, schools, and teams of all types by hosting a food drive. Now more than ever the most vulnerable need all of the help and support that the community can provide. More and more families are dealing with food shortages and the Boise Rescue Mission needs our help to stock those empty pantries and cupboards. With more people out of work and children out of school the need is great. The March to End Hunger hopes to help meet that need. 

In 2020 Idaho saw an increase of 22% of children who face food insecurities. That means another 42,000 children in Idaho are not getting the amount of food they need and likely don't know where their next meal will come from. Food insecurity is something that no child should have to face. We want to do our part to ensure that no child in the Treasure Valley will go without, and no parent should have to face food insecurity alone. The COVID-19 crisis has put an even larger burden on already struggling families.
